Between Friends - The Petra Pillow

At Aiayu, we believe true beauty is a reflection of the love and care an object is made with. This is especially true of our new Petra pillow – the result of a long friendship between Aiayu and the creative design studio, All the Way to Paris. Read on to learn more about the collaboration and the artisan origin story of the Petra pillow.

The founders of ATWTP, Tanja Vibe and Petra Gendt, have worked with Aiayu from the beginning, creating everything from our store identity, early logos on our bags to our watercolor llama hangtags. The creative duo effortlessly jumps between art, graphic design, interiors, product design and the power of print, among others – and we have long admired the work of their Copenhagen-based design agency.

After so much creative collaboration, it felt only natural to design a product together, something that would represent our friendship and shared aesthetic. So together, Aiayu and ATWTP created the Petra – a handwoven silk pillow featuring a calming spectrum of blue, green, and soft yellow tones in a subtle check pattern.

Given the camaraderie of the design process, we wanted the Petra to be made with the utmost care and craftsmanship. We agreed that the pillow would be best brought to life on a handloom by an expert artisan. This way, its silky texture could take on the irreplaceable feel of a handmade item. Our artisan workshop in Kathmandu, who is responsible for many of our stunning handmade home items – like the Flower Nepal pillow and Kaylan throw – was more than up for the task.

In the workshop, everything is done expertly by hand, the same way they have been done for centuries. The silk yarn is carefully hand dyed, then woven on large handlooms. The process is deeply impressive and incredible to witness, and the results truly speak for themselves – beautiful modern heirlooms that can be cherished a lifetime.

We hope the Petra pillow, designed with friendship in Copenhagen and made with love in Nepal, will have a cozy place in your home for many years.
