HOW WE WORK IN INDIA

Our mission in India was to showcase a sustainable approach in a conventional production country, favoured by companies around the world for its textile production.

Everything we do in India is made of 100% organic cotton and certified according to SA8000 and GOTS.  Meaning it is verified as a natural product, refined under high ethical standards, from fibre to final garment.

In northern India in a city called Agra, located on the banks of the river Yamuna, we work with one sustainable producer to manufacture all our cotton products for our certified organic cotton range.

ZERO WASTE IN INDIA

Sadly the textile industry is infamous for its excessive waste. From remnants of fabrics that could measure sky high to enormous amounts of erroneous production runs, cancelled orders, etc. The waste adds up to millions of leftover cuttings alone.
To help address this, we’ve set up a zero waste programme in India for all our cotton products. We take leftover fabric and cuttings from our own production and use them to create small items like our tote bags and hang tags, as well as larger items such as our Raw Quilts and Raw Rugs.

Furthermore, we also try to help eliminate waste by recycling excess fabric produced by others. In fact, the cotton tote bag you get when you shop on our Aiayu website is made of leftover fabric stock from other textile companies.
With profits from our zero waste products, we give donations to a local school for challenged children called TEARS, an acronym for Train, Educate And Rehabilitate Socially.

GIVING BACK LOCALLY

At Aiayu, we actively strive to support the local communities where we work, both environmentally and socially. Intrinsic to our concept is that our products are produced at their origin. This enables us to keep our products authentic, drawing on the unique local expertise to produce them.
Giving back to the local communities is our extra way to thank them for their help – by helping them in return.
With this in mind, we created our Aiayu organic cotton line.

REPUBLIC OF INDIA

India is an incredible country. An immense culture of contrasts and contradictions, with a plethora of impressions and sensations. It’s the seventh largest country in the world and the second most populated with over 1.2 billion people and growing. Given an economy that’s accelerating at a rapid rate over recent years, experts predict India will soon become one of the world’s leading markets.

In Agra where we produce our organic cotton line is the Taj Mahal. One of the eight wonders of the world and considered a testament of love. Also in Agra you’ll find two other UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Red Fort, the former imperial residence of the Mughal Dynasty and Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory), a complex comprised of imperial palaces and places of worship built during the 16th century.

RAW MATERIAL

India is known for its high quality cotton and refining expertise, which made it a logical choice in our search for a suitable partner for our organic cotton line.

All our Aiayu cotton is natural, organic Indian cotton. The highest ranked cotton fibres grown without the use of pesticides.

The farmers we work with in India have extensive experience growing organic cotton, yielding a high quality that’s actually higher than cotton that’s conventionally grown. They use techniques that support healthy eco systems and biodiversity, including reducing the consumption of water. Organic cotton requires special knowledge and skills, but the outcome is more beneficial for you – and for the environment.

We make a point of supporting organic producers who are certified for responsible production. They are often a minority of hard working individuals who truly comply with the requirements and follow the proper protocol. The government defines the rules for eco-friendly production but with very little enforcement. That’s why we only engage with experienced organic producers fighting for certification in all links of cotton production.

Our Aiayu cotton is GOTS certified, which guarantees that the cotton is 100% organic, involving sustainable production from the cultivation of the cotton to the final garment.

ZERO WASTE

While the global textile industry is known for contributing to waste worldwide, at Aiayu we go to great lengths to avoid waste in our own production. In fact, we have established a zero waste programme in India for all our cotton products, where we recycle leftover cuttings and fabrics and use them to make small items like our tote bags and hang tags – as well as larger designs, such as our Raw Quilts and Raw Rugs.

A percentage of the profit from this programme is donated to a local school for challenged children in Agra, India called TEARS: Train, Educate and Rehabilitate Socially. It reflects our desire to give back to the country where our products originate. To demonstrate our respect for their people, their society and the environment at large.
