Study of Light

We met up with Architect Flemming Skude on a trip to Lolland in September, just before the equinox marked the change of seasons. Visiting Himmelhuset (1998), one of Skude’s original houses and private holiday home.

“Himmelhuset” captures the ephemeral nature of light. With a glass roof that provides a direct view of the sky, it invites the sunlight in, creating a dynamic atmosphere. We were fortunate enough to witness the transformative effects this had during the course of a day. At dusk, the serenity on the overhead crossing made a gracious spot for stargazing.

The 80m2 house is carefully placed according to Feng Shui principles of eight cardinal directions, where a solid concrete wall divides the space—indicating areas for rest and for play. The wall also serves as a sundial, where one can tell the time by observing where sun and shadow meet.

After dusk, luminous details appeared on the raw concrete wall as artificial light from the study and bedroom peeped through its tie holes. Attracting your curiosity to the playful act of imagining the room beyond the wall.

Surrounded by more typical holiday houses in Hummingen, Skude’s fearless use of glass in his architecture builds on a harmonious relationship between indoor and outdoor. With thought-through details, like the wooden shades covering the glass gables, he creates a sense of privacy from the outside world.
